Saddle Height Calculator

Calculate your optimal saddle height using multiple validated methods for road, gravel, and MTB.

Measurements

Saddle Height

Calculate to see recommended height from multiple validated methods.

Interpretation

  • Saddle height affects power output, comfort, and injury risk.
  • Multiple methods are shown for comparison — they should agree within 1-2 cm.
  • Fine-tune ±5mm based on how your knees and hips feel during rides.

What to Do Next

  • Test the heel method: place heel on pedal at lowest point — leg should be straight.
  • Ride 30+ minutes at the new height before making further adjustments.
  • If knee pain develops, lower the saddle 3-5mm and reassess.

  • LeMond Method

Inseam × 0.883, developed by Greg LeMond. Widely validated.

  • Hamley Method

    Inseam × 0.885, from Hamley & Thomas (1967) research.

  • Modern Range

107-109% of inseam minus crank length. Accounts for equipment variables.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my inseam for saddle height?

Stand barefoot against a wall, place a book between your legs simulating a saddle, and measure from the top of the book to the floor. This is your cycling inseam.

Should MTB saddle height be lower than road?

Yes, typically 1-2 cm lower. Mountain biking requires more dynamic movement and clearance for technical terrain, steep descents, and sudden dismounts.

Does crank length affect saddle height?

Yes. Longer cranks effectively increase leg extension at the bottom of the stroke, requiring a slightly lower saddle. The difference is approximately 1mm of saddle height per 2.5mm of crank length change.
